About the Career

Opticianry is one of the three “O’s” of eyecare. The other two are Ophthalmology and Optometry. A Licensed Optician is an eyecare specialist. They advise, design and produce optical products such as eyeglasses, contacts, low-vision and specialized products. Licensed Opticians are one of 26 designated health professions regulated under the Health Professions Act in B.C.

As an Optician, you’ll find opportunities for employment in:

  • Optometry clinics
  • Optical stores (independent or chain)
  • Ophthalmology offices
  • Optics labs
  • Independent business offices
  • Product sales sector

Our program is accredited by the National Association of Canadian Optician Regulators (NACOR) and our graduates are well-prepared to take the national licensing exams.

About the Licensed Optician Program

Through a combination of theory, practice (labs), and application (practicum), you will be extensively trained in eyeglass dispensing, contact lens fitting and automated refraction. Beyond the technological skills, emphasis is placed on interpersonal communication, customer service and professional practice. This program prepares students to successfully complete NACOR’s national licensing exams while studying in Canada.

Stenberg’s Optician Program is a National Association of Canadian Optician Regulators (NACOR) accredited program.

Our Optician program is run in collaboration with Vancouver Community College’s Optician Diploma. Vancouver Community College is a public post-secondary institution with its main campus located in downtown Vancouver. Their Optician program is delivered at Stenberg’s campus in Surrey.

Admission Requirements

Pre-requisites:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or 19+ years of age
  • English 10 or meet IELTS requirement as stated below
  • Math 11 (minimum grade C-) or recognized equivalent from home country

Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • Overall IELTS Academic Test score* of 5.5 with no component less than 5.5. 
  • Advanced Entry: Overall IELTS Academic Test score* of 6.0 with no component less than 6.0. 

*Must be within the last 2 years.
